Ride the Roller Coaster Of Achievement

by: Amy Piros

Roller Coasters. Water Rides. Elephant Ears. All reasons to raise your grades. The Whitney Point High School's, School Improvement Committee created a program that would encourage students to raise their grades.
This program is called the Incentive Awards, created over six years ago. Gift certificates were funded by anonymous givers, to reward students for their good grades. One student that received the incentive award said, “I've never raised my grades before.”
There were a total of 88 students that raised their grades from the first marking period to the second marking period. Thirty two seniors, seventeen juniors, nineteen sophomores, and twenty freshman.
The School Improvement Committee has come up with a different incentive to encourage the students to raise their grades. If you have received a second incentive award, you earn a trip to an amusement park with all the other incentive award winners. Sounds like a good reason to raise your grades. Not only do you get to go to an amusement park for free, you also get to get out of school for the day.
If you didn't receive the first incentive award you still have a chance to receive one, you just won't be able to go on the trip to the amusement park. The incentive awards this time were $10 gift cards to Subway. In the past they have given gift cards to The Sundae Shoppe, McDonald's, the Oakdale Mall and the movies.
The whole point of the incentive awards is to encourage the students to make the effort to maintain or raise their grades.
