2008 Lacrosse Season

As the winter season draws to a close, students that occupy the Whitney Point High School look forward to, Spring Sports. Baseball, Softball, and Track are just a few but there's one spring sport that not only seems to defy the laws of physics, but indeed brings excitement for its fans - Lacrosse.

After a discouraged 7-13 season with 2 games canceled due to inclement weather, Coach Keith Wittig and the Whitney Point Golden Eagles look to rebound and to dive further into the Section 4 playoffs this season, after a disappointing loss to Corning East on May 30th ended there playoff run last season.

Coach Keith Wittig is very optimistic about the upcoming season, “Our team is young, but I feel that even with our tough schedule our team will be fully prepared for the season”.

When asked what game truly stood out to Coach Wittig, he responded that the May 8th game against Elmira- Notre Dame was truly unforgettable. Down a few goals during the third quarter, the eagles made a tremendous comeback to defeat Elmira – Notre Dame(at the time was 1st place in Division 3) 12-9.

Even after losing all of last year's starting seniors, the Whitney Point Golden Eagles still look very tough with returning players: D-I defense man Steve Ellis, Matt Fitzpatrick, who last year won 60% of his face-offs, Mason “Moose” Musshafen, Travis Knight, Zach Price, Shawn Taylor, and Mike Ryan.

There is an interesting position battle for goalie as brothers Eric And Cory Spisak battle for the starting position this season. Last season Eric(starting goalie) suffered a broken thumb during a regular season game, Coach Keith Wittig decided to bring (Then J-V goalie) Cory Spisak to replace his older brother in the net.”Cory did a great job for us last year and it will be interesting to see what results after all of this” Wittig said.

The 2008 season begins for the Whitney Point Golden Eagles on March 29th against rivals, The Binghamton Patriots.
