What It Takes To Be A Wrestler By: Kristi Rundell Wrestling is a sport that takes talent. Not only do wrestlers need to know moves, but they need to know how far they can and should push themselves, and they need motivation. This is not a sport where they move on to something else after practice. Wrestling is a twenty-four-seven sport. Keeping in shape and keeping their weight where it needs to be is a constant worry, and even off-season wrestlers need to be working out and improving their wrestling techniques. One match is a six-minute, non-stop workout in which every second counts. Moving constantly, any mistake can change the outcome of the match. A wrestler needs heart and talent in order to do well in the sport. Shawn Taylor, a wrestler since seventh grade, states “Many think that wrestling is easy since its only six minutes a match.” What they don't understand is that it takes just as much energy as other sports and they need to be in shape just as athletes in every other sport. Wrestling is like sprinting for six minutes straight. Wrestling is all about the pressure. Two people are the only ones on the mat at a time, and all pressure is on them. Each person must do well in order for his team to get any points. They also have all team members and their coaches focusing on them, cheering them on, and telling them what to do at every second. A wrestler needs to know a variety of moves in order to prosper in the sport. Some people think that wrestling is a very dangerous sport. With the constant losing and gaining of weight, the wrestlers become ill-looking and their bodies become weaker. Each wrestler must get down to the lowest weight possible and stay at that weight for the entire season. “It is a struggle, and our bodies are constantly fighting with us when we do it,” states Taylor. Wrestling takes agility, heart, and motivation. One must be passionate about the sport, and must be willing to go year-round improving themselves and staying fit. If they succeed, as many do, then most are provided with a promising future in college and in life, and their hard work is put it use.

Donnie Vinson is WP's Sectional Wrestling Champion By: Kristi Rundell & Sarah McDonald To excel in wrestling is a very difficult and tedious thing. A wrestler must give up all his social life and free time to even have a chance at winning a match. Many wrestlers who are willing to do this end up prospering and are able to go farther in life. One wrestler in particular who has excelled is Donnie Vinson. He is a passionate, motivated wrestler who never lets anything stand in his way. Most of his free time, year-round, is devoted to wrestling and improving his techniques. Vinson started wrestling eleven years ago. He says that his passion for wrestling comes from his father and his uncles, who also wrestled. A very talented wrestler, Vinson won a Section Four Title two years in a row, and placed second at States both years. He has competed in Freestyle and Greco Wrestling where he has continued to win. A well-rounded athlete, Vinson seems to be good at whatever sport he plays. From being one of the leading tacklers in football, to an all-star wrestler, he seems to have figured out what he wants in life. Vinson's motto, “It is not sufficient that I succeed, all others must fail” quoted by Genghis Khan, is the motivation he lives by. Training harder than his opponents, he works out two hours every week day, doing sprints, drilling moves, and live wrestling. He also lifts weights for over an hour every weekend. Everyone can see Vinson’s passion and talent for wrestling. It shows so much that even the recruits from Binghamton University noticed. He was awarded a full scholarship to Binghamton University, and his plans are to continue wrestling there in the fall. |
