NOT JUST FOR HOMEWORK ANYMORE
By: Ali Babcock
When thinking of writing at school, most would think of essays, book reports, and homework. One probably would not think of a club just for writing.
But in mid-October a group of students met to do just that.
Mrs. Sarah VanOstrand, a new high school English teacher, has the group meet once or twice a week, weather pending.
When asked why she decided to act as an advisor for this club, she replied “I decided to act as an advisor to this club because several of my students told me there was, currently, no Writer's Club...and expressed an interest in forming one.”
The group, who's members are Alicia Babcock, Dannielle Babcock, Elizabeth Babcock, Ashley Scott, Nichole Zimmer, Sarah Kozina, Stephanie Auberger and Wes Rainey, will get together and do a variety of assignments.
Assignments include writing interesting prompts, such as taking an inanimate object and writing a story about it as if it could dream. These assignments force them to think and expand their mind and creativity, but still have fun.
Usually, during the meetings, members will bring in a piece of their own writing and read it aloud to the group.
As far as the writing goes, Mrs. VanOstrand said, “We always have fun and enjoy sharing those pieces of ourselves that go into any good writer's work.”
